Why AI Literacy Has to Mean More Than Prompting
AI literacy cannot stop at prompt engineering.
Students need to understand how to use AI tools, but they also need to understand what kind of social, cognitive, and institutional spaces those tools create.
A student who knows how to prompt a model may still not know when they need a mentor, a peer, a teacher, a counselor, a colleague, a community, or a friend.
That distinction matters.
In a world where AI systems can respond fluently, remember context, offer encouragement, and appear socially present, institutions need to teach more than tool use.
They need to teach social discernment.
The University as Social Infrastructure
Universities are not only content-delivery systems.
They are social infrastructure.
A university helps people encounter fields, practices, mentors, peers, questions, institutions, disciplines, and futures they may not have known how to reach on their own.
That is especially true for students who do not arrive with strong professional networks, family familiarity with higher education, or a clear sense of how research, careers, and institutional life actually work.
Social connection is not a soft extra.
It is part of how students learn where they belong and what they might become.
The Risk of Outsourced Recognition
AI systems can give students something that feels like recognition.
They can respond quickly. They can help rewrite a paragraph. They can explain a concept without impatience. They can encourage. They can answer questions a student might feel embarrassed to ask in class.
That can be valuable.
But there is a danger if AI becomes the easiest or primary place where students feel seen.
Recognition from a system is not the same as recognition from a person embedded in a shared institution.
A model can help a student prepare a question. It cannot fully replace the experience of being noticed by a professor, challenged by a peer, invited into a lab, encouraged by an advisor, or welcomed into a community of practice.
Institutions should not let AI become a substitute for human belonging.
They should use AI, where appropriate, to help students reach human belonging more effectively.
AI Literacy as Relationship Literacy
Students need a vocabulary for different kinds of interaction.
They should be able to distinguish between:
- a tool;
- a tutor;
- a search system;
- a writing assistant;
- a social media feed;
- a parasocial relationship;
- an online human friendship;
- an AI companion;
- a mentor;
- a professional network;
- a research community;
- and an institutionally accountable support service.
These categories blur in practice, but naming them helps.
If a student experiences an AI tutor as patient and available, that may support learning. If the same student begins to treat the system as their only reliable source of encouragement, the institution should care about what is happening.
The question is not whether the tool is useful.
The question is whether the student's world is getting larger or smaller.
What Students Should Be Taught to Ask
AI literacy should include questions like:
- What is this system designed to optimize?
- What does it remember about me?
- Can I inspect or correct that memory?
- When should I ask a human instead?
- What kinds of support can this system safely provide?
- What kinds of support does it only appear to provide?
- Am I using this system to learn, or to avoid the discomfort of social risk?
- Who benefits from my continued engagement?
- What evidence should I trust, and what should I verify?
- How do I preserve my own agency while using this tool?
These questions are not anti-AI.
They are the beginning of mature AI use.
Mentorship Still Matters
One of the strongest arguments for institutional AI is that it can help people move through complexity.
It can help students understand programs, plan coursework, practice interviews, prepare research questions, draft emails, or translate institutional language.
But the goal should not be to automate away mentorship.
The goal should be to make mentorship more reachable.
An AI system might help a student prepare for office hours. It might help them ask a better question. It might help them understand what a research assistant position is, or how to write a first message to a faculty member.
That is useful if it leads back into human relationship.
It is less useful if it becomes a private loop where the student feels guided but never becomes connected.
Designing for Return
Educational AI should be designed for return.
Return to class.
Return to peers.
Return to the instructor.
Return to the lab.
Return to the advisor.
Return to the community.
Return to the student's own judgment.
The best AI systems in education should increase a student's capacity to participate in human learning environments, not quietly replace those environments with synthetic attention.
That means institutional design matters.
AI tools should include pathways to human support. They should encourage verification. They should make memory visible. They should respect privacy. They should not imply that every student need can be solved by another prompt.
Accessibility and Social Risk
This question is especially important for accessibility.
For some students, AI can reduce barriers. It can help with drafting, planning, translation, executive function, comprehension, fatigue, and confidence. It can make participation more possible.
That matters deeply.
But accessibility should not become isolation by another name.
If AI helps a student prepare to participate, excellent.
If AI becomes the place a student retreats because the institution remains inaccessible, that is not a complete solution.
Institutions still have to become more humane.
AI can support access. It should not excuse inaccessible systems.
The Responsibility of Institutions
Schools and universities should take this seriously before the norms harden.
Students are already forming habits around AI. They are already learning which questions go to a model, which questions go to a person, and which questions they avoid asking altogether.
Institutions can either ignore that hidden curriculum or teach it directly.
A serious approach would treat AI literacy, social belonging, mentorship, accessibility, and student wellbeing as connected.
Not as separate departments.
Not as afterthoughts.
As part of the same institutional responsibility.
A Better Definition of AI Literacy
AI literacy should mean more than knowing how to get an answer.
It should mean knowing what kind of answer you received, what relationship you formed to the system, what evidence you need, what memory was created, what human support remains necessary, and how to return to the world with more agency than you had before.
That is a higher bar.
It is also a more human one.
